Learning About Literacy Programs

As a staff we have had some conversations about how beneficial it would be if we learned more about our literacy journey and progression for our students all the way from Kindergarten to Grade 7. When we as a staff have a better understanding of what our students have learned in earlier grades, we are able to more effectively differentiate instruction and make more effective plans for learning. We have the potential to better identify areas where students may need additional support or enrichment and adjust our teaching strategies and pedagogy accordingly. This learning allows for a more targeted and individualized approach toward teaching and learning, with the intention of helping each student meet their full potential.

On our November 25th Professional Development day, we dedicated time to meet in grade-level groups to review the BC Ministry of Education's Curriculum. During these sessions, we focused on:

  • Understanding the curricular competencies students are expected to demonstrate, or do, at each grade level at year end.
  • Understanding the content students should know, or be familiar with, at each grade level at year end.

The PowerPoint images in the attached file reflect some of the conversations that we had as a staff during our Professional Development day. We’re excited to use some of our learning in planning upcoming literacy and learning experiences for our students moving forward.
