Cheers- A literacy based school story
Sometimes there is comfort in the known. Over the last few years, staff and students here at Anderson have worked hard to support the school story of Building community through mathematics. Through professional development, support from district consultants, innovative teaching practice, and opportunities to extend learning, we saw steady growth in numeracy related learning.
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name
And they’re always glad you came
You want to be where everybody knows your name.
-Cheers
Sometimes pausing, reflecting, and listening can yield new opportunities for growth. This year at Anderson, numerous conversations with classroom and resource teachers led to a deeper conversation about how we can effectively support students with their growth in literacy skills. This feedback was also expressed by students, who indicated that, “Sometimes reading and writing is hard.”
Supported by feedback from staff and students, and data analytics, we collectively made a school decision to celebrate the success of our previous school goal of Building community through mathematics and pivot our school story to focus on supporting growth in literacy through the use of the Pillars of Literacy.
We look forward to the new learning opportunities ahead.
