Building Leadership Capacity Through Mathematics
When Anderson's student council was asked where they saw leadership this year, their responses included: student council, lunch monitors, basketball and volleyball, being a big buddy, band, and technology.
None of the responses included being a leader through mathematics.
At our Math Day celebration, nearly 90 Grade 6&7 students helped lead, encourage, and facilitate the learning of many challenging numeracy tasks. Many Grade 6&7 student leaders learned that being an expert at mathematics was not required to help lead, but rather encouragement, in combination with a few mathematical learning strategies, can help to build confidence, community, and joy when learning new and challenging math concepts.
