Revisiting Our School Story- A Literacy Based Approach
Sometimes the process of reflection begins with a deeper dive, beginning with a scan of our school needs. Feedback from class reviews, school-based team meetings, and report card data indicate a need to revisit how we can best support literacy skills at school.
Using a strength-based approach, our staff spiral of inquiry scan identified many student strengths including creativity, willingness to share verbally, and in some cases making connections to text. Our scan also identified student stretches, including developing comprehension skills beyond decoding, phonological and phonemic awareness in language acquisition, and further developing confidence with written work.
As staff gathered for professional development learning in late September, they shared their feedback. This is one representation of what their feedback looked like:
Going forward, staff at Anderson are taking next steps towards supporting language development, using the Pillars of Literacy. Staff at Anderson are also excited to be participating in the district CEF (facilitating elementary collaboration) literacy project where they will work with district literacy consultants to support student growth in literacy.
We look forward to an exciting learning opportunity together!
